Access to nature both physical and through film footage and imagery can help people manage the stress of modern living.
According to a study from BBC Earth and the University of California, Berkeley, feeling a part of nature can help boost your happiness, improve mindfulness and lower cognitive anxiety.
Their research identified that viewers watching BBC nature content inspired significant increases in feelings of awe, contentedness, joy, amusement and curiosity, and also acted to reduce feelings of tiredness, anger and stress.
Results from the study also confirmed the causal relationship between ‘virtual nature’ and changes in emotion.
It has multiple positive effects including:
- Enhanced attention, focus and cognitive performance
- Decreased stress and enhanced calm
- Increased pro sociality and team working
