To develop our ability to focus we need to ‘work out’ our mental muscle.

Just like we would any muscle when it’s used repeatedly – it becomes stronger.

When we use new muscles it often feels uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating. Notice and tolerate these feelings as we now ‘work out’ for Focus over a period of just 1.5 minutes.

  • Sit in a comfortable upright position.
  • Close your eyes if you wish or hold a soft focus upon the scene in front of you.
  • Now bring your focus to your breathing.
  • Focus on your breathing. In and out.
  • Notice when your mind wanders to another thought.
  • Gently disengage with that new thought.
  • Bring your focus back to your breath and hold your gentle focus there.
  • Continue to do this for 30 seconds.

By practising this simple exercise each day you will develop your brain’s ability to bring back your focus whenever you are distracted.
